Ylang-ylang essential oil is obtained from the flowers of the ylang-ylang tree, which is native to Indonesia. The scent ranges from sweet-floral to woody. This essential oil can affect various hormones in our body.
The most important are serotonin, enkephalin and endorphin. Serotonin determines whether we feel relaxed or agitated. Enkephalin is an endogenous painkiller. The latter, endorphin or the 'happiness hormone', has an uplifting effect.
Its positive effects on our body include its action on blood pressure, its antispasmodic effect on menstrual cramps, the treatment of various skin problems, the reduction of oil production by the sebaceous glands in our skin, strong antifungal effects and much more.
Ylang-ylang essential oil can be applied directly to the skin because it is one of the oils that does not irritate the skin.
The ylang-ylang essential oil is available in abundance and is therefore affordable. It is highly valued in the perfume and cosmetics industry for its scent and is now also used in the food industry.
According to science, ylang-ylang essential oil is a mental stimulant. In the world of aromatherapy, on the other hand, this oil is considered one of the best oils for relaxing the mind and body. Simply smelling it can help lower blood pressure. Taking a bath with the oil or using it in a massage oil naturally enhances the relaxation experience.
The oil is used to relieve stress, depression, shock, or anxiety. When used as a hair tonic, it would balance oil production. However, be warned that high concentrations of ylang-ylang can cause headaches or nausea.
Ylang-ylang means flower of flowers in Malay and was traditionally considered an aphrodisiac and a relaxing scent, so the flowers of this tree were strewn on the wedding bed of a newly married couple in Indonesia. In China, the scent was used to purify the mandarin robes. Ylang-ylang essential oil has long been associated with perfumes and relaxation.
