Use essential oils
Essential oils can promote health and well-being. Aromatherapy works through the sense of smell and absorption through the skin. Below you can read more about the safe use of essential oils:
Inhalation: the oil is diluted drop by drop in water and evaporated using a diffuser, an aroma lamp or oil burner, or diluted as a spray. Essential oils can also be used in bathwater (diluted or undiluted with a carrier oil), allowing the molecules to be inhaled through the water vapor. In addition to a pleasant scent, aromatherapy oils can disinfect the respiratory tract, reduce swelling, and offer psychological benefits.
Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory organ and the part of the brain connected to smell. Molecules that enter the nose or mouth go to the lungs, and from there to other parts of the body. When the molecules reach the brain, they influence the limbic system, which is connected to emotions, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress, and the hormonal system. In this way, essential oils can have a subtle but holistic effect on the body.
Topical applications and massage: Essential oils are absorbed through the skin in diluted form by means of massage or mixed in bath salt or carrier oil in a (foot)bath. Massaging the area where the oil is applied can stimulate blood circulation and increase absorption. Essential oils are never applied directly to the skin. Read more about concentrations and dilution further below.
Allergy test: First perform an allergy test and dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil at twice the concentration you plan to use (e.g. 6-12 drops instead of 3-6 drops in 30 ml). Rub the mixture into a small area on the sensitive inner forearm. If no allergic reaction occurs within 24 to 48 hours, it should be safe to use the oil. If an allergic reaction still occurs due to repeated use, the person must immediately stop using the oil and avoid the scent.
Concentrations and dilution: For a dilution of 0.5% to 1%, use 3 to 6 drops of essential oil per 30 ml of carrier oil. For a dilution of 5%, you therefore add 30 drops to 30 ml of carrier oil. A maximum concentration of 5% is generally considered safe for adults.
ATTENTION: Ingesting or swallowing essential oils can be very dangerous. If ingested orally, the oils can damage the liver or kidneys. They can also lead to interactions with other medications and may undergo unexpected changes while in the intestine. Keep essential oils out of reach of children and ensure they do not get into the drain.
