It is obtained by steam distillation from the bark and branches of the Amyris balsamifera tree. Due to its high oil content, this wood burns on its own, like a candle, and is therefore called candlewood by the local population. It is a less expensive alternative to pure sandalwood.

This oil has been used to clean wounds and to treat colds and diarrhea. It is said to be highly effective in relieving bladder infections and vaginal infections. When used in a vaporizer, it helps reduce anxiety and sensation, and works as an aphrodisiac, alleviating impotence and frigidity. It is used to treat coughs, colds, and bronchitis. The calming properties are said to aid meditation. It is also a muscle relaxant and soothing agent.

The botanical origin of the tree that produced this oil was unknown until 1886, when the main differences between this plant and true sandalwood were established by microscopic examination of the leaves. The Amyris balsamifera tree grows wild in Haiti.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/5990/6728/products/172914_5078f8c5-cfca-4301-a2af-8f572df3f222.jpg?v=1627318584
