Hyssop
Latin name: Hyssopus Officinalis
Part used: Leaves and flowering tops
Origin: Slovenia
Extraction method: Steam distillation
Use: for external use only (never ingest), suitable for fragrance burner/diffuser, dilute in a fragrance-neutral base oil for use in a (foot) bath and on the skin (undiluted essential oil can irritate sensitive skin).
Hyssop essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and flowers of a shrub called hyssop. The health benefits of this essential oil can be attributed to its stimulating, antispasmodic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, and decongestant properties. It has a positive effect on scar formation and digestion, and acts as a diaphoretic, expectorant, diaphoretic, and antipyretic agent.
Because it is an antispasmodic agent, Hyssop essential oil relieves spasms of the respiratory system, thereby easing spasmodic coughing. It also treats spasms of the nervous system to reduce convulsions and related problems, as well as muscle spasms and cramps and spasms of the intestines caused by them, thereby relieving acute abdominal pain. Because hyssop oil improves and promotes blood circulation, it helps heal diseases related to poor circulation, such as rheumatism, arthritis, gout, and swelling.
This oil promotes digestion. Because it is a stimulant, it increases the secretion of gastric juices such as acids, enzymes, and bile in the stomach, which accelerates the breakdown of complex proteins, carbohydrates, and other nutrients.
